I saw a Sulfur butterfly yesterday. Where I live, seeing yellow butterflies signals that the season is subtly shifting toward autumn. While I don’t wish my days away, the promise of September’s arrival makes my heart sing! What makes your heart sing?
I truly believe it is vital that we find joy in the world around us, and I’ve learned that joy appears in small and sometimes strange ways.
In addition to the butterfly sighting, I’m joyful about seeing the family of rabbits that live in the maritime forest undergrowth in my neighborhood. Sometimes they peek out from beneath the live oaks and cedars, surrounded by Virginia creeper and cat brier. I wish them safety and long life.
I’ve also learned that joy brings gratitude. Every spring, when the Carolina Bass Linden tree in my yard begins to leaf, I celebrate new growth and offer gratitude for the shade the tree provides. Now, even in the heat of August, its leaves are beginning to drop, and I try to remember to say “thank you” for the gift the tree has given all summer.
What I’m suggesting here is a big PAUSE. If your days are like mine, making time to just stop and be joyful and grateful seems impossible. This is the time of year when I take stock of how I spend my time, and I am committing to doing better at doing “nothing.”
I taught a class this week about Crows. One of the topics we discussed was how we might better pay attention to them, and to the world around us. The more time I spend doing “nothing,” spend time in being in stillness, the more I hear and see and feel. Let’s try it together.
That said, I need to tell you I’m still “being” with the content for the new metaphysical course I promised for September, and I’m not ready to release the course yet, but it is coming soon! I’ll post information here when registration is open.
