Bringing the Light Home, December 2022
Some years ago, my friend Joel had chaos while flying home for the winter holidays, arriving hours later than scheduled. He spent some time with his family, and then drove his mom’s old, but pristine, Buick to my house. I greeted him with a hug, good coffee, and sugar cookies. As he released his travel tension with a deep sigh, he said wryly, “I am the gift, no matter what time I arrive.” That sentence sums up my whole attitude about the holidays and gift-giving and receiving.
I love this wonderful sentence: “I’d rather have your presence than your presents.” Do you feel that way too? Joel sitting at my kitchen table is one of the greatest gifts in the world!
So as we’re on the run-up to the holidays, I thought I’d offer some “giving” suggestions to you:
Offer to do chores for someone who may be challenged. Here are some tasks you could do that only cost your time:
Clean spaces your friend might not be able to reach – both high and low (top of the refrigerator or the rear of a lower cupboard).
Do heavy chores – scrub the kitchen floor, lift something your friend needs to be moved.
Run errands.
Do yard work, or share cuttings from your plants (a friend is still growing, and sharing, Thai basil and lettuce from her summer garden with me!)
Don’t ask your friend what you can do for him/her! Instead, try “I’d like to help you with some heavy cleaning. Can I come over Saturday morning?” Your friend is much more likely to accept your help.
Make a donation in your friend’s honor to a charity you know your friend supports.
Give an experience instead of an object – a membership to a local museum, or a season tickets to theatre performances, for example. Your friend probably will remember this gift much longer than a tangible gift. And it would be great if you bought yourself the same experience so you could enjoy it together!
Whatever you choose to give to friends and family during the winter holidays, remember to give to yourself as well. Give yourself permission to:
Take time each day for yourself
Relax and nurture your body, mind, and spirit
Laugh and find humor
Feel sad and overwhelmed, so long as you don’t stay with those emotions for long
Be alone to recharge your emotional batteries
Say “no” when you don’t want to do something, or engage with people
Ultimately, I’m suggesting that you don’t have to fall prey to the commercialism of the season. Remember this: You are the gift.

Tarot Key of the Month: The Empress
The Empress Key represents a container, an internal place of fertility where hopes and dreams come true, where we can be all we know we can be. She is Sophia, wisdom personified. She is Everywoman. She is you, and she will guide you home to yourself.
The Empress Key represents Mother Earth and Earth Mother. As Mother Earth, she embodies the fecundity and fertility of the planet. She is seated in a fertile garden of ripe wheat, sacred to the Egyptian goddess Isis, surrounded by a stream of consciousness running through a stand of cypress trees, sacred to the Roman goddess Venus. Her headdress of myrtle, her necklace of pearls, and her heart-shaped shield reinforce her connections to Venus, the goddess of love.
As Earth Mother, beneath her gown of white for purity of thought and red for passion, she is pregnant with esoteric knowledge, the ability to teach and to nurture us as we move forward on our path to enlightenment. She is the active force that both supports us and encourages us to move more deeply into our connection with the divine.
You can connect more deeply with the Empress within yourself in my “Bringing the Wise Woman Home” course, offered in January.

This course offers a container, a bowl, into which we sometimes pour the deepest parts of ourselves, and which we sometimes leave empty, awaiting fulfillment.
Somewhere along life’s journey, many women lose sight of who they really are, deep inside. This course affords women an opportunity to find their core being, to celebrate her, honor her, and to commit to act on their convictions. We’ll explore the archetypes of “Wild Woman,” of “Wisdom Seeker”, and of “Home.”
This course asks the questions:
Who was I when I was truly me?
Where did I go?
How can I find home?
The archetypes of the Wild Woman and the Wisdom Seeker speak to the need to find who we truly are, and how our journey to selfhood brings peace within and without.
You’ll connect with women who walk beside you along the path to wisdom, and women who will howl and share the wildness of your deepest dreams with you. Most of all, you will find a container for all that is hopeful within you.
