Some years ago, my friend Joel had chaos while flying home for the winter holidays, arriving hours later than scheduled. He spent some time with his family, and then drove his mom’s old, but pristine, Buick to my house. I greeted him with a hug, good coffee, and sugar cookies. As he released his travel tension with a deep sigh, he said wryly, “I am the gift, no matter what time I arrive.” That sentence sums up my whole attitude about the holidays and gift-giving and receiving.
