Winter Appreciate Before Winter Comes- December 2023
Honoring Darkness, Holidays, Upcoming Courses, Meditation, Writing Update, & so much more!
Good afternoon!
Do you, like me, treasure this dark time of the year? Last weekend my world was shrouded in fog. I could not see the marshes across the sound and the great blue heron’s squawk was muffled in grayness. There was no twilight, the fog deepened into night. In the busyness of the coming holidays, I rejoiced for a moment’s reprieve into silence.
I have learned to winter-appreciate before winter comes.
I love these days of lead and nights without stars when hot tea and a good book are comfort. I appreciate the time to reflect and write. I listen to music without words – Gregorian chants and Celtic harps are my winter soundtracks.
While I honor the darkness, I also celebrate the coming light at Winter Solstice. On that day, December 21 this year, as the world shifts ever so slightly toward summer in the northern hemisphere, most world beliefs honor the arrival of light in some way. I cherish this common ground among so many of us. I look forward to rituals with friends and families of many faiths over the holidays.
My latest creative nonfiction work, Takin’ Up a Poundin’, pays tribute to my family, winter, and holiday traditions. It’s published in Salvation South (so hope you’ll become a member!) Click here to read it.

Mary Shelley Follow-up
In my November newsletter, I told you how Mary Shelley came to me in a dream, offering to help with my writing (odd I know, but I’m happy for assistance however it comes!). My writing is going well, so I’m grateful!
A newsletter subscriber from Cornwall wrote to tell me he’d visited the place where Shelley wrote most of Frankenstein. I’ve received responses from lots of you expressing your thoughts, so please know I’m always excited to hear from you. And cheers to the writing muses, whoever they may be!
Meditation Thoughts
I offer you this month my meditation entitled “Winter Appreciate Before Winter Comes” I hope you enjoy it!
I’m so happy to connect with you and I’m grateful that you have taken a course with me and subscribe to this newsletter!

UPCOMING Course!
A note about my relationship with Tarot: Tarot is so much more than a divination method. Its history reaches back so far that we don’t know its origins. Tarot has been used to relay messages between royal courts, to hide legends and teachings in plain sight, and to offer us metaphors for our personal life lessons and journeys. My deep respect for Tarot crosses many boundaries, but my deepest gratitude is the way in which world beliefs, mythologies, cultures, and history join together in the images and meanings of the keys to guide our paths today. I so hope you’ll begin your Tarot journey to yourself in this course.

Just One More Thing Before You Go
“My father tried to teach me to find common ground and light within everyone I meet. Searching for that light within others and myself has led me to one of the reasons I so love the December holidays. I love the symbolism of light that threads through so many world beliefs.” -Takin’ Up A Poundin’
