On March 7, 2023, on the eve of International Women’s Day and under a full moon, I gathered all my courage and wrote my deepest heart’s desire around the inside edge of a precious pottery bowl. The idea of creating an “incantation bowl” comes from Sue Monk Kidd’s brilliant novel, The Book of Longings. In the newsletter I sent after doing this, I told you about writing in this bowl, but I didn’t tell you what I wrote. I didn’t share what I’d written because, no matter how deep my longing, the fear of failing was greater.

Here's a portion of what I wrote: “May my words be guided… may my words honor all life… may my words be read by those who need them and heeded by all who are called by them. When I am gone, may you say that I, and my words, mattered. Blessed be and so it is.”

Now, a year later, I don’t believe I’ve failed. Some of my work has been published, and more is in review. I’m writing about subjects that matter, I hope, to us all – home, family, and the desperate need to protect Mother Earth and all her inhabitants.

I told you last November that Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, author of Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus, appeared in a dream, offering to be a muse for me. Since then, others have appeared, but I think the new folks are more task-specific. For example, as I’m creating materials for my upcoming Tarot course (see below), Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung have offered suggestions. I hope Pamela Colman Smith will help! It’s busy most nights in my dreams!

I’m also grateful to the keepers of ancient myths and legends that bring archetypical information to the common ground we all share, and I love how Tarot is a repository for that knowledge. When you watch The Fool step off the precipice, do you see your quest for yourself? Do you, too, seek the Grail? Do you, like me, see aspects of both Demeter and Persephone within you? Are you The Hermit, the wise one who guides our paths?

As a writer, I’m forever searching for metaphors and symbols in the world around me. For hundreds of years, Tarot symbols have been a gathering place for world beliefs and a source through which we can discover common ground among us and within aspects of ourselves. Tarot offers an exploration of myths and legends, and of cultures and beliefs, that are as old as time and as modern as this moment. For many years, the symbols of Tarot have guided my travel to the world around me, and to myself.

The Time Between

Where I live, most of the seasonal changes are happening underground, out of sight. Root stirring, sending up shoots, and rhizomes spreading occur below the dirt. The sky is unrelentingly leaden. Even the ever-green cedar branches and live oak leaves in the maritime forest are dull. Sea oat stalks are brittle rust on the dunes, and the cordgrass in the marsh disappears into the gray sound.

Yet, there are signs. Daffodils are blooming. Hope comes with sneezes as pollen begins to yellow our car hoods. Hope comes on the wings of robins. I wrote last month that I was worried because they were so late in returning to my neighborhood. I’m still worried about that, of course, but delighted to see them cavorting on my street.

So I watch, and wait, and hope. When Charlie the Great Blue Heron arrives on my neighbor’s dock, I’ll know spring is really coming. In the meantime, I cherish this in-between time.
