The Time Between Time- September 2021
Dear ,
Do you ever feel that you miss, or don’t understand, the answer when you ask for guidance? I certainly do! As we move into my favorite time of year, let me share with you something that happened to me recently that may be helpful to you.
Balance. Connection. Hope. Three words I heard recently while meditating.
“But how do I find balance? connection? hope?” I asked.
Repeatedly the answer I received was one short command: “Pay attention!”
“To what? To whom?” I asked, frustrated. I believe that I DO pay attention, but apparently, not enough.
So much is happening in the next few weeks that reinforce the notion of balance, connection, and hope, if we pay attention, so I’m trying to live into the answer I received!
On September 20 the full moon occurs at 7:55 pm eastern time. In my tradition, this full moon is called the Harvest Moon. This is the full moon closest to the Autumnal Equinox, which is a time of balance. The Harvest Moon invites us to examine what we have reaped in our lives from that which we have sown. On this night I’ll go outside in the moonlight and offer up thanks for the bountiful gifts I’ve received. I’ll meditate about the seeds I’ve planted this year – people whose lives I’ve touched and who have touched mine, words I’ve written and read. And I’ll begin storing up the portion of my harvest I want to keep, giving away some of it, and releasing what no longer serves my highest good.
On September 21 we celebrate International Day of Peace. I am honored to be a member of Grandmothers for Peace, an international organization that connects those working for peace around the globe. My local chapter has, for many years, hosted an outdoor event on this day, filled with words of wisdom and music, and hope. I’m always invited to speak and I love being a part of this event.
On September 22 the Vernal Equinox occurs, as the Sun moves into the sign of Libra at 3:21 pm eastern time. The Vernal Equinox heralds a moment of the balance of light and dark when day and night are of equal duration. The pagan holiday of Mabon is celebrated on this day. Mabon is the second of the three harvest celebrations in the pagan calendar. (The first was Lughnasadh on August 1 and the third will be Samhain on October 31.) This, too, is a day of giving thanks and sharing our harvest.
On September 27 Mercury goes retrograde. However, keep in mind that Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto have been retrograde this month. Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto will go forward in October while Neptune and Uranus continue retrograde for a while longer. Here’s what that means for us: We have an opportunity in October to transcend derision and move into a time of connectedness. Words have power, and Mercury retrograde gives us an opportunity to be aware of the words we speak.
It is through the words we speak that balance and connection come together in hope. In this time of uncertainty and confusion, now is the time for thoughtful clarity of our words so that we bring hope to a weary world.
In this time of transitions, now is the time to move forward in balance. In connection to all that is. In hope.

Tarot Key of the Month: The Hermit
Often overlooked for its apparent simplicity, The Hermit is filled with meaning and is one of my favorite keys. Clad in a gray cloak against a grayish-blue background, The Hermit stands sentinel on a snow-covered mountaintop, holding a simple staff in one hand and a lantern in the other.
The Lamp of Truth he holds is a beacon for both himself and those who are ascending to the mountaintop. The light within the lamp is the six-pointed star, the Seal of Solomon, reminding us of the adage “as above, so below; as within, so without.” All who seek truth and enlightenment through darkness in their lives can depend on The Hermit’s light to guide their path.
His staff offers sure-footed guidance through the dangerous crags and avalanches of life. Some Tarot historians say that he stands on the same mountaintop as The Fool, guiding us ever forward on our journey to enlightenment.
Number Nine in Tarot’s Major Arcana, The Hermit also reminds us that everything in our lives circles and repeats and comes to an end and circles around again. Nine is the mystical number of endings so that we can begin again – an appropriate key for the ninth month of September, I think, as we transition to October and the Celtic New Year of Samhain.
Book Review
In the Shadow of a Rainbow: The True Story of a Friendship Between Man and Wolf
Originally published in 1974, this remarkable book is still in print, and is one of my favorites. I reread it each autumn in honor of my friend Raven, who introduced me to it, and who helps me so much with this newsletter and other projects.
This is the true story of Gregory Tah-Kloma and Nahani, a silver female wolf whose name means “the one who shines.” They met one summer as Greg traversed the backwoods of British Columbia and as Nahani searched for a safe place to hide and den her pack. During their first encounter, Greg and Nahani become fast friends. Farmers and trappers and those who speak with forked-tongues about wolves have put a price on Nahani’s head, and Greg is determined to protect her and her pack. This remarkable true story about two beings who have lived in deep harmony and community, with humility, kindness, and respect, continues to teach us that all beings really are related, and that balance, connection, and hope are possible among all of Mother Earth’s children.

Just One More Thing Before You Go
This funny photo was taken at a rehearsal for “The Savannah Sipping Society,” produced in August by a wonderful theater company of which I am a member. I was honored to portray Dottie in this comedy with a message about enduring friendships, happiness, and hope.
Now I confess, this Libra gal is one of those “pumpkin-everything” people. I come alive in autumn, breathing in the brisk salt wind blowing off the sea, in walks crunching through leaves in the forest, and in star-studded night skies around a bonfire.
So I’m taking the month of October for me. I’m writing and submitting work for publication. I’m walking on the beach. I’m giving myself an opportunity to slow down, to grieve and honor friends who have died over the summer. I’m giving myself permission to celebrate one of those big circles of the sun! And yes, there will be a newsletter mid-October filled with information about my November and winter offerings, so watch for it!
Thank you, , for reading my newsletter!
