Giving Thanks for the Dark Time
Dear ,
November 2020 feels to be a turning point in a very strange year, and I am grateful that the wheel spins now into a new season. Even as we move into the dark time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, a glimmer of light shines dimly in the distance.
In my tradition, November is the beginning of a new spiritual year, and I love the upcoming holidays. Offering up thanks for more blessings than I can count at Thanksgiving makes my heart sing. I celebrate sharing what I’ve harvested or stored away for the winter. I celebrate the people in my life and honor resting Mother Earth. I exhale a breath I didn’t realize I was holding, and give myself permission to simply be for a moment, cherishing lingering sunsets and that liminal space between sea and sky.
I wish for you the gift of time during this season of darkness – time to enjoy the night sky, and time to see the stars of the future.
Honoring the Elders: Happy Birthday To Jean the Palm Reader
I am blessed to have had many teachers along my path. Some I know only from books I read, music I listen to, and now, websites I visit. Others are younger people who keep me growing and learning as they teach me new ways of thinking (and share new books and music with me)! Still, others are the elders who have so influenced me – many gone on now. But there is one very special elder who I cherish every day.
“Granny Jean the Palm Reader,” as she is known to the hundreds whose palms she’s read over the past 50 years, celebrated her 93rd birthday this week. She no longer sees well enough to read palms, and she has other health issues that limit her mobility, but she’s still mentally sharp, filled with humor, and kind beyond measure.
Jean and I have been friends for 49 years. We’ve had one argument in all these years (over a bowl of ice cream early one morning in the Guadalajara airport – it’s a long story!) We have, along with our friend Joel the crystalologist, studied and researched and created paths for ourselves that propel our spiritual journeys forward in this lifetime. I am deeply grateful for her love and friendship, and deeply grateful to know that she has, and continues to, touch the lives of so many others.
In the photo, she is dressed as Mrs. Claus for a holiday fund-raiser at a local museum. She’s worn many hats!

Tarot Key for the Month: The Star
Many life lessons are embedded in The Star key, but I’d like to focus in this writing on the gift of hope that The Star offers us.
The maiden represents Mother Nature, the Empress, Mother Goddesses, and more, who pour onto Earth the gifts of the waters of life. Note that she pours this gift into both the pool of the unconscious mind and the earth of the conscious mind. The pool is stirred by the power of meditation, and the five streams flowing onto Earth represent our five senses before they blend with universal consciousness.
There are eight stars surrounding the maiden. The seven white stars surrounding the maiden represent the seven major chakras in the body, and the larger, yellow star represents the eighth, or higher chakra, that sits about a foot over our head.
When all is in balance – the flow of life, the spreading of thought and emotion through meditation, the pouring forth of our senses into intuition, the flow of energy through our chakras, around our bodies, and into the world around us, WE become beacons of hope.
As we move forward in this new year, as the wheel turns again, may we remember that each of us is the hope the world needs in these troubled times.
Book Recommendation of the Month
As the Last Leaf Falls by Kristoffer Hughes
A pagan’s perspective on death, dying and bereavement is the subtitle of this beautiful book. Hughes, Chief of the Anglesey Druid Order, and member of the Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids, has worked for many years in service to Her Majesty’s Coroner in Wales, so he knows of which he writes.
Hughes will be the guest on our PsychicTeachers podcast episode that begins airing on Sunday, November 22 at 9 PM Eastern. You can listen then, and anytime thereafter, on most podcast outlets.
This is not simply a “how to grieve” book, although it is filled with kind suggestions and exercises. Rather, it explores how we view death and dying, and how we might shift our perspective about them toward a vision of inclusion in the cycle of life.
Hughes offers us a new way of thinking about the three realms in which we exist, and how we can incorporate our concepts of those realms into our lives every day. The end of the book is filled with practical suggestions and lovely rituals for the end of life, and beyond.
I’ve long recommended Starhawk’s The Pagan Book of Living and Dying to my friends in the medical and hospice professions, and to people who themselves are facing end-of-life care and decisions. I’m thrilled to be able to add Hughes’ book. A must-read, I believe!
Hughes is a prolific writer, particularly about the goddess Cerridwen, and he has a new book coming out about her next spring- stay tuned!
