As we move more deeply into the darkest time of year in the Northern Hemisphere, we need all the light we can get. Our ancestors must have felt the same, because holidays and rituals about light abound in winter in many lands and cultures.
This year, the Winter Solstice occurs on December 21, and Solstice Eve is the longest night of the year. On the day of the Solstice, the sun crosses the Tropic of Capricorn and begins its journey northward, each day the sun shining just a little longer.

We’re lighting candles on Sunday evenings as we approach Winter Solstice. We began on Sunday, November 23, lighting one candle. On Sunday, November 30, we will light two candles. On Sunday, December 7, light three. On Sunday, December 14, light four, and on Sunday, December 21 – Solstice – light five. Join us as we move toward the Solstice. It doesn’t matter what kind or color of candle or how long you let them burn!
